It at the same time considers the history of the progress of the citizen's society as that history has a deep relation with the rise of novel. John Dryden, John Bunyan, John Locke and other famous writers contributed to the establishment of the standard English prose style. Journalism was also a very important factor to the history of English prose style. Joseph Addison and Richard Steele were great essayists as well as early journalists. It might be said that they almost stood at the entrance of the modern novel.
