| 内容記述 | This paper discusses the history of adult education in English evening school administration, focusing on the work of the School Board for London that had been one of the most prominent education authorities in the country from 1870 to 1904. Very few attempts have been made at the history of adult education provided by evening schools under the school board in comparison with the other adult education movements during the latter half of the nineteenth century. What must not be forgotten, however, is that these evening schools, in the case of large cities, had been a major sector of adult education and they had met the demand of adults, as well as adolescents, who had desired the elementary, advanced, and recreational classes in the night. First, I describe the establishment of the English evening school administration and the initial experiment made by the School Board for London. Then, I present the development of evening schools under the Board related to the changes of Education Department's Code from the 1880s to 1890s. Finally, I will examine the extension of the work to the field of adult education toward the end of the 19th century. | |||||||
